As dusk settles on another Friday, I find myself nestled in the familiar comfort of reflection. It's a ritual of mine, a moment to pause and ponder the week that has just slipped through my fingers. I call it "the review of the week that was," a time to ask myself whether I've truly lived the past seven days to their fullest.
This isn't about tallying financial gains or ticking off business achievements. It's deeper than that. It's about life—in all of its vibrant, chaotic beauty. To live a life less ordinary, I strive for a return on investment that can't be quantified in currency: the return of time well spent, the rush of dopamine, the serenity of mental wellness, and the joy of precious moments with family and kids. It's about embracing the thrill of adventure, like mountain biking through nature's playground—though this week, the relentless rain played spoilsport to my two-wheeled escapades.
But before we delve into the gains, let's first recount the events that unfolded. How could this week have been better? Beyond the typical ROI—which stands for 'return on investment,' let's consider a different acronym: OCI, or 'Opportunity Cost of Inaction.'
Jot this down, because it's crucial.
Opportunity cost amid inaction.
At week's end, I no longer dwell solely on what I've gained. That mindset belongs to a former version of myself, always hungering for more. Instead, my focus has shifted to what might have been lost—the opportunities missed, the chances not taken, the moments that slipped away while I stood still.
What activities could have enriched my life further? Where should I have invested more time? It's essential to recognize both our triumphs and our shortcomings because, despite a well-executed plan that may have yielded satisfying sales or memorable experiences, there's always room for improvement. And why strive for better? Because the alternative is stagnation, and in a sense, a slow demise, regardless of whether you're in the prime of youth or the golden years of wisdom.
Every week, I challenge myself to look beyond the immediate and consider the potential of 'what could be.' It's a philosophy I've come to embrace wholeheartedly.
So here we are, it's Friday again. What's on your agenda? Perhaps a glass of wine and the latest binge-worthy series on Netflix. But before you surrender to the siren call of easy entertainment, I urge you to take a mere ten minutes to look back at your own week. Ask yourself: where did the opportunity cost of inaction manifest? How could you have improved? What might you have done differently?
Armed with these insights, you can approach the coming week with a fresh perspective, identifying those key areas where you can take more action and succumb less to inaction.
From my corner here in rain-drenched Melbourne, I extend my sincerest hopes for the skies to clear, for us all to bask in the opportunity to live fully and have a bit of fun.
Until next time, have a fantastic weekend. Embrace life with passion and never stop asking yourself: where can I minimise the opportunity cost of inaction?
Cheers to growth, to action, and to the relentless pursuit of a life extraordinarily lived.
